Agreed, Pat, and thanks for posting!
Time, effort, and talent. Yeah, I can't imagine that being a Mercury award winner is something that happens without significant work. I watched an interview with the band on YouTube when The Seldom Seen Kid came out and was surprised to learn they'd been at it for 18 years! New to me but not to the rest of the world. Or their world I should say since I don't think they were doing much traveling prior to Seldom Seen Kid. Far as I know they only did two US shows for it.

Yes there are very sound evolutionary reasons for generalists and specialists and I'm definitely making the most of being the former and there are probably more avenues available to me then I'm able to see at the moment. The dreams will drive me. Certainly an interesting life either way. :)

I agree about Guy Garveys lyrics but I wouldn't beat yourself up. I know he doesn't find it easy him self.

But his lyrics really are poetry and the imagery he creates with so few carefully chosen words is astounding. I love the line about "one late June, I came down from the trees... " .. he's followed through with the simian imagery with evolution while talking about growing up, maturing, becoming an adult during those long school holidays, long summers trying to impress the girls. Its a whole period of life and experiences we can all relate to conjured up 9 simple words.

Seriously underrated. But then I'm nutty about them too.

Talking of evolution .. there's very sound reasons why there are generalists and specialists, extroverts and introverts, leaders and followers. They're all essential and responsible for our survival as a species. Once you accept which one you are you can take advantage of it and be a lot happier.

Ok. So I tried this last weekend at a picnic. What I ended up doing was bringing a jar with the gin already infused with ginger and mint and another jar with the sour (honey/lime) pre-mixed. Then I combined the onsite with ice. Yeah, I could've done that at home but I didn't have a single container big enough for six servings so I split it up.
Anyway...
Since I didn't want to pack along mint, ginger, and a shaker to get the flavor out of them I instead let them soak in the ginger from the day before. Probably on the order of 36 hours at room temperature in a cupboard. The only thing I would've done differently is strained out the gin and ginger the following morning instead of leaving it in until we drank in the afternoon. The mint looked a bit wilty and brown and the ginger was an odd yellow green. Definitely not attractive and I'm sure the flavor in them was probably out after 12 hours let alone 36... most importantly the cocktail was a big hit and I think that infusing the liquor like this recipe requires PRIOR to a party is the way to go. Else, if your home shake the stuff, shake, shake, shake, with ice. Definitely going to play around with infusing though...

RE: Israelites, it's a pretty complicated issue.

When getting your information from American media sources vis a vis Israel, you have to remember that Christians believe their fate is directly tied to that of Jews. As such, the vast majority of American news sources will always paint Israel as the underdog and in the perpetual role of the oppressed.

Some research into Zionism, which directly led to the founding of Israel in 1948, would go a long way to testing your own truths on the issue which from your statements seem to fall on the side of sympathy for the Jews (not a Weird Al cover of a Rolling Stones tune).

Here's a good article circa 2001 from on of my personal heroes, who it so happens is Jewish, Tim Wise.

Good article on the flotilla raid.

Here's an independent blog which focuses on the human rights abuses by Israel.

McClatchey (highly respected news outfit) article on how the Gaza blockade is really about economic warfare against Hamas (which, ironically, was created by Israel when it tried to push the Islamists against the PLO).

Billl, thinking about it she was likely repeating something she'd been told but hadn't really thought through AND she wasn't presenting it as a subject for argument or challenge. The latter is a FAIL any ol' way because she started out with one of us having to be dead wrong. Not saying that's unusual but people who want me to drink the Kool-Aid or shut up do not pass through the filter.

The truth is the truth. It's not a comfort zone where everything we want to be real is. Plenty of truths make me squirm and doubt as well but at least it leads me to fully informed decisions. Fortunately this and some other recent discussions this past week have led me to a working title for a new post, Test Your Truth, which means I'm about 95% ready to start writing it. I'll try to stay away from any "dangerous philosophy" but who knows. ;)

That's the whole thing, dude. They're not *OFFERING* ANYTHING! :D

The whole game is laid out as a gal looking for a guy to make her life worth living. That's all well and good and I can do that for you, definitely, but what's in it for me? The satisfaction of having made someone's life worthwhile? That's what KIDS are for.

Then, if they're offering you anything AT ALL, it's the same thing every other chick's offering. :D So they want you to not interact with the rest of the gals that are trying to do the same thing with you that she is, for WHAT reason again? So HER life can be better and not THEIRS, for having spent time with you? haha okayyyyyyy ;)

It's funny that she got you with the old "objectifying women" label, like you're supposed to do something different. I'm sure she would have liked it better if you hadn't noticed she's a female at all.. Except.. WHOOPS!!! You wouldn't have been talking to her IN THE FIRST PLACE because you met her ON A DATING SITE!!! hahaha

For that, she should remove her gender description and see how many raps she gets.

Idiotic, Yet Typical. :D

Ha! Bill, you changed gears pretty quickly here, but I follow you. Noise. Noise. Noise. Is still noise.

In addition to whatever substantial discussions I've had in the last 365+ I was equally responsible for adding to the noise, chatter, buzz, whatever. With this post I was trying to convey a feeling (or bunch of them) of what my year was like by recollecting the tangential things I've spewed out along the way. As an analogy, usually we're talking about the car but this time I'm talking about how the air flows around the car. Hot air, at that. lol

Getting to the heart of what someone of the opposite sex is trying to convey in real life in NYC can be a challenge. I've met women who seemed to be very transparent and approachable but weren't interested in talking to me because they'd already made up their minds about who I am (discrimination?) or could be and I've met women who want to talk to me all night long and then, poof, they're gone. Most times with no reason whatsoever.

There's this ability to disappear into the crowd in NYC that lets people out of a lot of accountability and leads to some flat out poor social behavior. Or at least social behavior I don't like. What else to expect when there's a huge transient population with no sense of community? I can not believe that people are basically good or evil when the evidence in front of me is that they (ok, we) will do pretty much whatever our environment lets us get away with. NYC is a good place to work and have fun though. Asking for anything else may be like asking not to get bit when you jump into a cobra pit. Just because you're in your kung-fu stance.

Interestingly enough, this is a pretty decent account of a drunken evening out on the town in New York City. So many irrelevant conversations. So many statements with no focus and no use. If you don't learn to suppress the actual and stick to the meaning or the ramifications of what's being said, you waste a lot of brainpower trying to retain stuff that chicks said that's actually completely worthless.
